The Conway Agency for Children and Families with Special Needs provides
effective treatment for children with autism and related disorders. At the
Conway Agency we strive to help children and their families by developing
individualized behavior programs based on each child’s strengths and
deficits, following the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
Applied Behavior Analysis is an objective discipline, which has evolved
through countless research projects that are scientifically based and time-
tested. In fact, applied behavior analysis has been proven, through
extensive research, over the past half-century, to be the most effective
intervention we have for treating people with autism and pervasive
developmental disabilities.
Many of you may be concerned that with the use of ABA, your child will be
taught to behave in a scripted manner. It is our philosophy at The Conway
Agency to tailor each and every treatment program to your child’s specific
personality. Therefore, your child will not only be taught academic and
language skills, and activities of daily living, but also how to play, initiate
conversation with adults and same-age peers, and how to use unstructured,
free time in a productive, socially acceptable manner. While we have an
extensive and challenging curriculum to ensure that your child develops to
his or her fullest potential, we make it a priority not to “push” your child
beyond his or her ability. We make learning and interacting with others fun
and enjoyable.
In addition to using the principles of applied behavior analysis to help each
child develop the functional skills necessary to live independent and
productive lives, The Conway Agency has the unique philosophy of
including the entire family in the treatment process. We believe that if your
child has special needs, you as a family may also have special needs. As a
result, we offer (optional) support groups for parents and grandparents to
discuss the challenges they are faced with each day as a result of living with
a child with special needs. We also offer (optional) support groups for
siblings so they too, have a supportive environment in which to discuss the
many challenging feelings and unique situations inherent in living with a
sibling who has a developmental disability.
Another component to our treatment approach involves teaching you, the
parent, as well as other caregivers in your child’s everyday life (i.e., nannies,
grandparents, and when appropriate, siblings) successful strategies so that
eventually, over time, you will have an intuitive approach to effectively
manage challenging behaviors that emerge in your child as he or she grows
and develops.
The Conway Agency is small by definition, and purposely so, as a means to
offer each family the individual and personal attention they require and
deserve.
